First, the Miata is some 200 pounds lighter than the 124. The steering is lighter in action, too. While I think the Fiat has a better ride quality at higher speeds, the Miata feels more eager
Killer2005 Original Poster 18,515 posts 207 months Saturday 15th January 2011 I have been thinking about my next car, and have been thinking that I need a RWD sports car for about 4-5k. There was an option of going slightly over my budget for something along the lines of a Caterham or a Honda S2000, but lack of suitable storage places and insurance prices have put these ideas to bed, so its down to the Z3 vs more interestingly, I'm leaning more towards the Z3 than the MX5. Largely due to the fact that my commute at the moment is nearly all dual carriageway or motorway, and I really don't get enough time on twisties So sensible thinking or has insanity finally taken over me? Saturday 15th January 2011 S2000 is cracking and in terms of speed and sound is fantastic and an easy car to live with so would be worth the extra stretch,if not I would advise the newest shape of the MR2 formally known as the MR-s plus you'd have spare cash if you went for one of these vvti 0-60 8 secondsair con in someplus it's a forgiving mid engined car which is great for daily commuting and is also at home on a trackday or 4 if not then I'd say the Mx5 purely because it's a great car , plenty of enthusiasts , plenty of tuning scope etc hope that helps ya chap Saturday 15th January 2011 The MX5 is the better sports car, but the Z3 (assuming you're talking about an I6) may well be the better GT. Neither is really designed for motorways. MR2 Spyder is arguably a better drive (certainly more of a sports car in terms of handling than the Z3) although a front engined RWD is more progressive and easier to have 'leet drift fun' with than a 'midship runabout'.Where it falls down is a complete lack of storage space compared to just about every other cabriolet (and in my humble opinion that is really the only insurmountable negative point). That said, I am not sure if a rear luggage rack is as it is a mid(engined)-ship, the cabin is quite big compared to an MX5 (relatively speaking) and there is usable space in the passenger footwell. Brilliant cars and for 5k you can find a good one of either. I've sold my Z3 six months ago for It needed is absolutely nothing wrong with Z3 on a motorway. One thing - wind deflector is a must if you are thinking of roofless m/way you want it quieter with roof up you can buy an optional engine in is very nice to drive in town too, plenty of torque at low revs. redgriff500 said: Z3 is not a sportscarOh really? Saturday 15th January 2011 A 2 seater sportscar isn't what you want for a commute in my opinion, something bigger, more comfortable and wafty would be more suited.. I'm sure, though, that you have already considered Z3 is the worst of both worlds, it's neither as fun as an MX-5 nor as comfortable as a mondeo or other motorway muncher. A Z3 is likely to cost you a lot more than an MX-5 or a mondeo in running money would go on a mk MX-5 with a hard top (and leather if possible, but the hard top would be more of a priority). $45,000: New Mazda MX-5 RF or used BMW Z4. T his was going to be a fairly straightforward review of the sporty MX-5 RF, an entertaining hardtop convertible from Mazda, until I reflected upon its pre-tax MSRP of $45,295. That kind of green will buy a variety of gently used late-model premium two-seat roadsters, such as the Porsche Boxster
News Original Z4 plummets to old MX-5 pricing 20 Jul 2017 Buying new, the Mazda MX-5 is the world’s best-value when purchasing a used rear-drive drop-top, a relatively unloved and unlikely contender has arguably taken the title – from the era of Chris Bangle and made in the USA, enter the original BMW the undercooked (albeit James Bond Goldeneye-cool) BMW Z3 roadster that was meant to challenge the original Porsche Boxster in the late 1990s, the Z4 made a far better fist of things. There are two models worthy of note, and both are now stellar the classifieds first, however, and note that the NA-generation MX-5 is still commanding big money for a decades-old car. Original 1989 examples are fetching over $5000 while the last-of-the-line (and sought-after) 1996 can see $10, the NB-gen that followed, particularly in 2004 SE Turbo guise, stretches from $12,000 to $20,000 depending on the kilometre reading. These Japanese roadsters are as great to drive as they are easy to work on and endlessly reliable, but there’s a big ‘but’ under $15,000 a decade-old BMW Z4 roadster can be purchased with around 100,000km showing (or similar kays to the equivalent Mazda). The Z4 cost $92,000 plus on-road costs brand new, and it came equipped with a straight six-cylinder producing 170kW at 5900rpm and 300Nm at 3500rpm, with a six-speed manual good for a standstill to 100km/h sprint time of around this to the 126kW/206Nm in an MX-5 SE Z4 with a Dodge Viper V10 engineUnderpinned by an E46 3 Series chassis, it was no duffer in the handling department, either. That said, it lacked an LSD and this was round one of BMW’s foray into electric power steering, which wasn’t a high point of the car. No, the Z4 wasn’t quite Boxster-good – but it simply isn’t possible to buy the Porsche for this money on the used-car is a second contender for best-value roadster honours as well – the BMW Z4 M. For around $30,000 it makes an E46 M3 of the era seem pricey, and it could surely tempt some away from that petite new ND-gen MX-5 base E46 M3-derived S54 straight six (with 252kW at a soaring 7900rpm and 365Nm at 4900rpm) placed the LSD-equipped chassis to great use. The manual-equipped sprint to triple-figure speed was covered in around – which is still brisk by today’s standards. Hard-top versions of the Z4 M will of course ask more than the roadster, in the same way that (at least for now) a Cayman will ask more from your wallet than a Boxster just look at the long bonnet and epic dash-to-axle ratio of the first BMW Z4, with driver’s bum on the axle and short rear overhang, then tell us you’d rather a Mazda MX-5. Recently, I got into doing comparison articles with the reasons why I bought my Miata over my other car choices. That opened the doors to continue digging a little deeper. Let’s look closely at the Mazda MX-5 Miata vs Porsche Boxster. Let’s start by laying out the ground rules for this comparison… We all know the Boxster costs about twice as much as a new, fully-loaded Mazda MX-5 Miata. For that reason, this may sound like a less than ideal comparison. But is it really? Keep in mind, this comparison is based on the NC Miata (2006-2013+). Various legitimate comparisons can be made between it and the 986 and 987 Porsche Boxster. Comparing it to a 981 Boxster (2013+) is not quite as ideal right now, although I’m sure there are people doing so already. Of course, the new vs new comparison below would be based on a 981 Porsche Boxster. There are 3 situations in which a buyer would be comparing Miata vs Boxster: 1. New vs New: A buyer with good money in his pockets could be considering a new Boxster vs a new Miata. The difference in the end will be a decision based on which car he prefers, whether he pays the Boxster’s new premium price, or saves a chunk of change and enjoys the Miata instead. It might not necessarily be a cost-based decision. Having said that, a new 981 Porsche Boxster would yield the biggest price difference up from a Mazda MX-5. 2. New vs Used: This comparison would likely be the most common… 2 equally-priced cars. A brand new MX-5 at $30k vs a used Porsche Boxster at $30k. Of course, the appeal is obvious… Your budget says you can only spend 30g’s so those are the options. 3. Used us Used: This third option will likely be the least common. This is typically for the guys that refuse to pay new car premiums regardless of the vehicle. They can afford a used Boxster, but even if they go for a MX-5, would still buy it used. All are plausible situations and I’ve spoken with many car guys that have in fact considered at least one of these Miata vs Boxster scenarios. Anyway, I’ve driven both cars and I’ve read countless comparisons and forum posts that compare both cars. These are some of the things I’ve found: Pros for the Mazda MX-5 Miata 1. The MX-5 offers more bang for the buck. Of course, this one’s a no-brainer. You can buy a brand new one, with full warranty for the price of a used Boxster with no warranty, or barely any left. 2. The MX-5 is going to be cheaper to maintain. New or used, the Miata is almost always going to be less expensive to maintain and run. Repairs are cheaper and so is regular maintenance, such as oil changes, brake service, etc. However, there are ways around this with the Porsche if you really want it. But we’ll leave that for a little later. 3. The MX-5 can likely offer a more carefree enjoyment. Given the smaller cost of the MX-5, enjoyment could likely be bigger than with the Boxster, specially if you are concerned with costs. You can take them out in bad weather, park them with less concern and overall worry less about it than you would with the Porsche. 4. The MX-5 can be more fun to drive. I’ve heard this one from folks that have owned both. The MX-5 might not be as refined, but it’s engaging at lower speeds. If you factor out the “coolness” factor of owning a Porsche and just concentrate on the drive alone, many claim the Miata is more fun to drive. You can chuck it into corners easier due to the reduced weight and you can hoon in it and have fun without breaking every speed law on the road. Rowing through gears and revving the engine is just plain fun. In the Boxster, you’ll be doing less of that because by the time you’re redlining second gear, you’re breaking the speed limit badly. This is coming from the horse’s mouth of Boxster/Miata owners. I’m just paraphrasing. Basically, the MX-5 Miata will feel more “sporty” at lower speeds. The Miata will also offer more drama at lower speeds. 5. Don’t have to deal with IMS (Intermediate Shaft Bearing) issues. It is well-known the IMS in the Boxster engines up to 2008 can fail causing catastrophic failure. This is more probable in older cars, mostly the 986 Boxster. Yes, there are things you can do to help prevent it, even if you decide not to install a fix before it happens (the “fix” can be very expensive), but it’s always nice not to have to worry about it at all, right? When peace of mind is concerned, the Miata has the Porsche beat. Pros for the Porsche Boxster 1. The Boxster is simply a better car in every way. You are paying twice for the car, and if it’s pre-owned you’re paying the same money as a new MX-5 Miata for a car with at least 35,000 miles on it already… So you’d expect the car to be better overall. Well, it is. You get better materials inside and out, better fit and finish, better factory suspension, more power, more refinement, a Porsche badge, etc, etc. 2. Porsche ownership for Miata money. Listen, criticize Porsche owners all your want, but for the most part, it’s cooler to own a Porsche than it is to own a Miata. I bet the OG’s at Mazda HQ secretly own Porsches. So of course, being able to buy a Boxster for Miata money is quite appealing. 3. Better interior. This fits with the 1st point of it being a better car in every way. However, it merits a point of it’s own. The interior in the Porsche, specially that of the 987 Boxster is waaaay nicer than that of the MX-5 Miata. The seats are better, the dash is nicer, the door cards too, you get the picture. 4. Better at higher speeds. The Miata will feel livelier at lower speeds but the Boxster will feel better and more confidence-inspiring at higher speeds. However, by then you should probably be on a track and not on public roads. 5. You’ll be happier with a Boxster in stock form. If you are the modding type, the Miata would likely be a better option. But if you’d rather just enjoy the car as it is from factory, the Boxster will be much better out of the “box” 😉 Most likely, you’ll be happier with it as is, so long as you buy the right one. Meaning, buy the Boxster S if you want more power, versus trying to upgrade a base Boxster. On the MX-5 you’ll likely spend more time and money upgrading a few things before you are completely happy. In regards to that last bit, here’s our article of essential NC Miata modifications. …if you can easily afford either, maintenance and running costs included, then you can truthfully make a decision based solely on preference. As you can see, the deal breaker is cost. It’s safe to say that if you can easily afford either, maintenance and running costs included, then you can truthfully make a decision based solely on preference. But for many, it will be a cost-based decision. If you are hoping to work on the car yourself, whether to save on costs or because you like to do the work yourself, the Miata will be easier to work on. This specially for home-garage-shop car folks. The MX-5 is smaller and lighter and you can work on it from the top for many projects. On the Boxsters however, just about everything that has to do with the drivetrain needs to be done from under the car. Reducing ownership costs of the Porsche Boxster As mentioned briefly earlier, one good way to reduce the ownership costs of the Porsche Boxster is to do a lot of the maintenance work yourself. Things like oil changes, brake jobs and the like can be done at home… Harder to do than in the MX-5, but it’s still doable. Another way to reduce costs on the Boxster if you are dead-set on wanting one over a Miata is to have work done at independent shops rather than at dealerships. Given that for many it will be a financial decision, this might be the only way you could afford one of them over a Miata. For that, you should join Porsche Club of America and the popular Porsche forums and dig up the contacts for trusted local Porsche specialists in your area. If you take the time to find good independent techs, you can save a lot of money over a dealer workshop. Not to mention, the work can be just as good, if not better. Again, if you find the right guy. Final notes Porsche does know what they are doing when it comes to the market position of their cars. While the price of a used Boxster can allow someone with a Miata budget to enjoy Porsche ownership, the risks are higher for those people. The fact is, that no matter what, Mazda markets the MX-5 Miata as a inexpensive convertible sports car for a reason, and places it correctly in that market segment. Porsche on the other hand might be aiming the Boxster at people who can’t afford a 911 (even if they deny it), but still have fairly fat checking accounts. You need to understand this before you get in way over your head. It also depends on where you spend your money. If your only hobby is cars, you can likely afford a Boxster even on moderate income. But if you have 10 different money-sucking hobbies that you refuse to let go off in favor of cars, the MX-5 can very well satisfy your sports car thrills. This said, it would be unfair to segment Porsche or MX-5 Miata buyers solely on how much coin they can swing. As many status-symbol Porsche driving people as there are, you have proper enthusiasts that buy a car for the actual driving experience. For that reason, there are many enthusiasts that can easily afford a Porsche 911 for example, but consider Boxsters, or even buy Miatas, just ’cause. Costs aside, the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Porsche Boxster do fit in the same comparison table. In Consumer Reports surveys, both cars are actually head to head, year after year, in the sports car convertible segment. Even when a new Boxster is twice the money of a new Miata. Both cars are fun and extremely competent and each has pros and cons in relation to each other. Take your time, test both cars and crunch the numbers. Unless you are getting in over your head in costs, it would be hard to make a mistake when choosing between either of these cars.

#1 Well, had the zed for a few weeks now so time for a codgatation. Compared to the mk1 mazda the zed has a much more solid heavy feel to it, the dynamics and drive feel very different. The mazda a very light car with sharp steering and nicely weighted , i guess there is more than enough reviews out on the mx5 that i can add much too. The zed, well we did not get off to a very good start. Our tour of the south coast ended in Lymington where the car remained for the week while the rac approved garage sourced an electric radiator fan to replace the fan which was seized, [we had overheated in Winchester but Lymington was closer to our booked hotel in Christchurch] Made use of public transport for the week, shame, it was perfect top down motoring weather. On collecting the car and driving away the abs light was showing on the dash, i returned to be told the light was on when the car was left with them hmmmm, this was 4 in the afternoon so with 330 miles to go i was keen to get on the road, Brimmed the tank at the co-op opposite and set off after. After 2 or 3 miles an intermitent miss arrrrgh, [ could it be rubbish petrol?] Anyway got home safe, time for some troubleshooting. However after a bumpy start am starting to enjoy the zed, couple of trips to the Yorkshire Dales have been great and enjoying the car. In summary, two very different but nice top down cars. Z3I Zorg Legend #2 Did the ABS light go out after a short time? As I've learnt working on various parts of the car, often the ABS warning is triggered by battery being disconnected/reconnected, and then working on a ABS checked part of the car. #3 Drivers Car = MX5 Miniature muscle car = Z3 both have plus and minus points and having owned both i would be more inclined towards the Z3 overall but definitely miss the sweetness of the MX5 #4 I still have a mk1 eunos s ltd great little car very agile compared to the zed. But for distance driving the zed is so much better. #5 Could not agree more, distance driving much better in the zed, garage plugged in lymington plugged in the zed and said rear abs sensors both sides so i have renewed them , new spark plug leads cured the misfire #6 Could not agree more, distance driving much better in the zed, garage plugged in lymington plugged in the zed and said rear abs sensors both sides so i have renewed them , new spark plug leads cured the misfire My mate has an eunos with a mini supercharger it is very lively #7 MX5 ok for tazzing round the lanes, I had one , sweet gear change, but rust like mad. Z3 a better quality car, just spent a month driving across Spain, wouldn't have done that in my fault with the Z3 is the gear change, otherwise I love it ! #8 I had a foot in both camps too. My Eunos was brilliant fun, much more than the heavy Z3. But it nearly impossible to compare the two for all the above reasons. Shame they rotted like they did, but if they didn't, I probably would not be typing this. Tony. #9 I had a MX5 back in the day as did I have a Zed 3 in 1999 The MX5 is much lighter more nimble loves to rev handles really well around country lanes where as a Z3 feels heavier more of a cruiser well it is in a it's much quieter when not reved high and feels happier not being chased around but better on a motorway. Obviously the Z3 is a much better build quality all over mechanical interior body . Hope that helps. Ps the MX5 never went wrong in 3 years nothing at all I heard they rarely do go wrong very reliable. Last edited: Aug 4, 2018 #10 Last week I was on some twisty back roads and an MX5 came up close behind trying to goad me into going for it. Glad I didn't after reading the thread as me and my would have looked stupid. Maybe I need a supercharger ........ #11 Probably less so than someone in a 6 cyl. car mate. The 4 pots are very nimble I believe. Tony. #12 Yes, the M44 is just as nimble as the MX5/Eunos, and much better built. #13 I think Mx5s are great but the Z3 is SOOO MUCH prettier. The Mazda looks like a white good in comparison (IMO). And the Z3 has the big six-cylinder option, which I would gladly sacrifice some handling points for. In my use case, the extra grunt is far more useful in day-to-day driving than better steering or handling. #14 Thanks for the input guys, i would agree with the comments / observations made, i have had the mazda 18 years so hanging on to it for now, presently sorn. The zed is my wifes choice, sorry to say our little problems have knocked her confidence , does not want to take it out on her own. Our last little indulgence was a chrysler crossfire convertable, had it three summers, the zed is a much better car. andyglym Shiny Dust Caps Make Your Zed Go Faster. #15 The latest edition of modern classics has a head to head, MX-5 v's Z3. That's interesting, because the perceived wisdom is the Mx5 is streets ahead of the Z3. I'm guessing the Mazda won on steering and handling and the Z3 won on refinement, comfort and build quality? I've always thought the gap between them can't possibly be as big as people make out. Throw a big six-cylinder into the mix and you'd have a different winner by a bigger margin in my view (but then it wouldn't be comparing apples with apples etc). andyglym Shiny Dust Caps Make Your Zed Go Faster. #17 That's interesting, because the perceived wisdom is the Mx5 is streets ahead of the Z3. All stated they'd take the keys for the Zed on a long cruise but the MX-5 for the short twisty stuff. Rated the Z3 engine better too. #18 Only thing I would take issue with is the engine thing. The Mazda twin cam is a great engine. Tony. andyglym Shiny Dust Caps Make Your Zed Go Faster. #19 Only thing I would take issue with is the engine thing. The Mazda twin cam is a great engine. Tony. Not had one so can't comment but they said the MX-5 ran out of puff top end. #20 Thought i would add an update to this old thread. I have had the zed for two years now, the mx5/eunos i had for 18 years was sold 18 months ago. I have been won over by the z3 in the past two years. Thank you to the mods and all for your contributions for to a great forum.

I am almost 16 and looking at cars to buy. I have found many Z3s and Miatas for good prices .I am very interested in the Z3 but my friends say its not reliable and the Miata will be much cheaper to own. I habe been googlin and don't know what to think because many say Miata is better, others say Z3 is a better Z3s I have found are cheaper and never than the Miatas but if there are a lot of problems with the Z3, I might have to consider the Miata...Here are some of the options I have foundZ3
Read our expert review. "The Mazda MX-5 is a unique car. Nothing else provides such an appealing blend of sportiness and affordability, or mixes the pure driving thrills of a classic roadster with bang-up-to-date tech in quite the same way. It does require a few compromises, but it’s little wonder that it was named Most Loved Car in the 2019
MAZDA MX-5 Skyactiv-G 184 pk MOTOR: viercilinder, atmosferisch, CILINDERINHOUD: cc, MAX. Now, look. I’m not saying that no one should live their dreams and modify their car to look like a different car. I, too, harbor dreams of owning exotics that I know I’ll never be able to afford. I just think you might want to dream bigger if you’re going to be putting this much effort into your car. In this case, the car is a 1990 Mazda MX-5 (which is a good start) that’s been modified to look like a BMW Z3. I have no issue with the Z3, it seems like a perfectly lovable little sports car, but it’s not exactly an Enzo or even a Corvette that these kinds of mishmash body kits are often trying to emulate. According to the seller, a Facebook user from the Baltimore area, this fiberglass body kit was produced in the ’90s and was installed by a previous owner. Despite that, the car is not without its selling points. Read Also: How Could This Chevroge Viporvette Not Sell On BaT? The recipient of a Jackson Racing Supercharger, Borla exhaust, Bilstein suspension, and Momo steering wheel, this was no doubt a fun little car in its day. Unfortunately, that day was a few years ago and now the car has become “a project.” Although it runs, the interior apparently needs some attention, as does the wiring to make the headlights work properly, and the car has 129,000 miles (~208,000 km) under its belt. Per the seller, though, it’s been through quite a bit of maintenance in the last year, including spark plugs, a new fuel pump, filters, front brakes, and more. Unfortunately, those BBS wheels are not being sold with the car. Beyond not really understanding how the promise of a BMW Z3 would have made this kit seem like it was worth the time and effort, as is usually the case with such mods, it does have some issues. The hood looks alright, but it clearly becomes a Miata once you reach the doors in a way that I find jarring. Maybe it’s as a result of its age, but the seams on this car are just painfully obvious to me. On the other hand, if you want a supercharged, rear-wheel drive, manual sports car for $3,900 (and a bit of work), this may not seem like a dealbreaker to you. In any case, you can check it out on Facebook marketplace. PHOTO GALLERY more photos...

To starcie brytyjskie kabrio wygrał 10 punktami. – to obecnie najstarszy model w palecie bawarskiego producenta. MX-5 „żyje” i zaraża swoją żywiołowością kierowcę. Wręcz przeciwnie, przystępuje do wyprzedzania! If you're after a relatively affordable rear-drive roadster that isn't a Mazda MX-5, the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3 and Mercedes SLK are all tempting options. Here's what Motor Week thought of the

Home News Mazda Miata Disguised As A BMW Z3 Is A Horror Show Jan. 29, 2022 7:11 AM ET For Sale Some people just want to watch the Miata burn. For whatever reason, this NA Mazda MX-5 Miata has had its entire identity changed to that of a BMW Z3. If this is something that you might find tasteful, you'll be glad to know that it is currently up for sale at a competitive $3,900. This excludes the amount you'll pay to travel to Baltimore for the you wish to get in touch with the owner to berate him for this modification, he already has a response lined up for you. The seller clarifies in the description that the conversion took place 20 years ago and adds that he doesn't care about your opinion. Jason McPherson/Facebook Jason McPherson/Facebook For added context, he explains that the original owner of the car opted to apply the kit which was sold as a complete package back in the 90s. In an attempt to turn this into the ultimate driving machine, the car has had a Jackson Racing Supercharger fitted to the four-cylinder engine. This has been accentuated by a Borla exhaust system, Momo steering wheel, and Bilstein seller notes that the car is running thanks to some routine maintenance jobs. This includes the fitment of new spark plugs, a fuel pump, cam angle sensor, air filter, radiator and coolant, front brakes sourced from a second-generation model, and pads and rotors for the rear axle. Jason McPherson/Facebook Jason McPherson/Facebook Despite all this work, it's still not in concourse condition. Once you take delivery, the Z3 Miata will need its interior to be redone together with a rewiring of the headlights. Thankfully, the taillights and interior electronics are all in working order. If you had your eyes on those BBS wheels, we're sorry to let you know that they are not included in the purchase. For these, you'll have to fork out an additional $800. If you don't tick this option box, the seller will let you choose some rollers from his collection, of which there are two isn't the first time that the little Miata has been used as the base to create something entirely different. Over in Japan, Mitsuoka revealed a limited run of builds that pay tribute to the C2 Chevrolet Corvette. This has had pretty much every panel replaced with muscular surfaces and chrome trimmings. Over in Spain, Hurtman is getting to work on its Grand Albaycin which has been reshaped to mimic classical British roadsters. There are a couple of "deficiencies" with the Z3s, at least when compared to the Miata. Weight. Okay, not a super heavy car, but definitely heavier than a Miata. Along with that, parts are going to be more expensive and will wear faster. The biggest issue is the rear end. The Z3 was a parts-bin car.
